The Basics

What is a credit score and why does it matter?

A credit score is a number — typically between 300 and 850 — that summarises your history of borrowing and repaying money. The higher your score, the more confident a lender is that you will repay what you borrow.

In Ghana, credit scores are generated and maintained by licensed Credit Reference Bureaux including XDS Data Ghana, operating under the Bank of Ghana's supervision. These bureaux collect repayment data from banks, micro-credit institutions, telcos and mobile money providers.

Every time you borrow and repay — whether from TruCredit, a bank or even your mobile money provider — that information contributes to your score. Your credit history follows you and opens doors to better rates, larger loans and faster approvals.

TruCredit reports to the credit bureau.

Every loan you repay on time with TruCredit is reported positively to XDS Data Ghana, building your credit profile for every future lender in Ghana.

What We Measure

The five factors that make up your credit score

Understanding these factors is the first step to improving your score. The percentage shows how much each one contributes to your total score.

Score Composition

Payment 35%
Utilisation 25%
History 15%
Credit 15%
New 10%

Your track record of repaying loans and debts on time. This is the single biggest factor. Every loan you repay on time at TruCredit builds a positive record on your credit file.

How to improve this factor:

Paying every instalment on or before the due date
Never missing a payment with any lender
Repaying mobile money loans on time (they count too)
Clearing any outstanding debts before applying

How much of your available credit you are currently using. Borrowing too close to your limit signals financial stress. Aim to use no more than 60% of what you are eligible for.

How to improve this factor:

Not over-borrowing beyond what you need
Repaying existing loans before applying for more
Keeping your debt-to-income ratio manageable
Avoiding multiple loans from different lenders at the same time

How long you have had credit relationships. A longer history gives lenders more data to assess your reliability. This is why starting with a small TruCredit loan and repaying it is a smart first step.

How to improve this factor:

Maintaining your relationship with TruCredit over time
Avoiding closing old credit accounts you no longer use
Building a track record gradually before seeking large loans
Returning to the same lender for subsequent borrowing

Having experience with different types of credit demonstrates versatility. A borrower who has managed both personal and business credit is typically viewed more favourably than someone with only one type.

How to improve this factor:

Having both personal and business credit experience
Managing short-term and medium-term obligations
Combining mobile money credit with institutional loans
Showing you can handle different repayment structures

Every time you formally apply for credit, it may leave a mark on your file. Too many applications in a short period suggests financial desperation. Apply only when you genuinely need credit and are confident you qualify.

How to improve this factor:

Only applying for credit when you truly need it
Spacing out applications from different lenders
Not applying for credit immediately after being declined
Checking your eligibility informally before making a formal application
Score Bands

What your score range means for your application

Excellent
750 – 850

You are a low-risk borrower. You qualify for the best rates and largest loan amounts TruCredit offers. Your file shows a long, consistent history of responsible repayment.

Good
680 – 749

You have a solid credit profile. You qualify for most TruCredit products with competitive rates. Minor gaps in history or slightly elevated utilisation hold you back from Excellent.

Fair
580 – 679

You can access credit but may face more conditions. A missed payment or short credit history is common here. Focus on consistent on-time repayment to move up within 6 to 12 months.

Poor
450 – 579

Past difficulties show on your file. You may still qualify for a small starter loan at TruCredit. Speak to our team honestly — we consider the full picture, not just the score.

No History
Unscored

You have no formal credit record. This is very common in Ghana. TruCredit specialises in first-time borrowers. A guarantor and strong character reference open the door.

Score ranges are indicative and may vary between credit bureaux. TruCredit considers the full picture, not just the number.

How We Assess You

TruCredit's credit assessment process

We go beyond a credit bureau score. Our process combines data, human judgment and community insight to make fair, fast decisions.

1
Day 1
Application received

You submit your application in person or via WhatsApp. Our team records your details, verifies your ID and confirms your guarantor.

2
Day 1–2
Credit bureau check

With your consent, we query the credit bureau (XDS Data Ghana) to retrieve your credit report. This takes minutes. First-time applicants receive an unscored assessment instead.

3
Day 2
Character and capacity assessment

Our loan officer meets with you to understand your business, income and repayment capacity. We assess character, collateral alternatives and community standing — not just numbers.

4
Day 2–3
Guarantor verification

We verify your guarantor's identity, their relationship to you and their willingness to support your application. This is a critical step for all TruCredit products.

5
Day 3
Credit committee decision

A small committee reviews your full profile and makes the final approval decision. Applicants are notified by phone as soon as the decision is made.

6
Day 3–4
Disbursement

Approved loans are disbursed within 24 hours of the decision, directly to your mobile money wallet or bank account. Most applicants receive funds the same day as approval.

Action Plan

Six things you can do right now to improve your score

Always pay on time

Set a reminder on your phone the week before each instalment is due. Late payment is the single biggest damage you can do to your credit profile.

📅

Start small and grow

Your first loan builds the foundation. Repay it perfectly, and you unlock access to larger amounts at better terms. Rushing into large loans before your record is established is a common mistake.

📈

Be honest in your application

Lenders check information. Exaggerating income or hiding debts usually leads to rejection or default. An honest application, even with flaws, earns far more trust.

🤝

Repay mobile money loans too

MTN Qwikloan, Vodafone Cash Credit and similar products appear on your credit bureau report. They are not informal. Treat them with the same discipline as any institutional loan.

📱

Check your credit report

You can request a copy of your credit report from XDS Data Ghana. Review it for errors. Incorrect negative entries can hold your score back and can be disputed and corrected.

🔍

Space your applications

Do not apply to multiple lenders at the same time. Each formal application is logged. Multiple applications in a short window signals desperation and will typically lead to rejection from all of them.

⏱️

Self-Assessment

Estimate your credit readiness

Answer these questions honestly to get an indicative sense of where you stand. This is not an official credit assessment.
